Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-377, carrying Prime Minister Tareque Rahman, developed a spoiler fault. After a delay of about five hours and completion of repairs, the flight departed from Tokyo for Dhaka.

The Daily Times of Bangladesh reported this information in its news bulletin at 8:17pm on Thursday (October 29).

What happened at Narita

At Tokyo's Narita airport, the aircraft pushed back and was taxiing toward the runway. At that time, the pilot spotted a fault signal in the cockpit.

The pilot quickly contacted the control tower. Takeoff was then cancelled and the aircraft was taken back to parking. Repair work was carried out there.

After the repairs, the flight left for Dhaka. In total, the flight was delayed by about five hours.

What a spoiler is

A spoiler is a part of an aircraft's wing. During takeoff it reduces lift, and after landing it helps slow the aircraft down. The normal functioning of this part is important for flight operations.

Those who confirmed

Atiqur Rahman Rumon, the prime minister's additional press secretary, confirmed the fault in the flight.

Shahnoor Ahmed, Biman's public relations official, also confirmed the fault in the VVIP flight.

In the event of such a mechanical fault on a VVIP flight, swift action is taken according to security protocol. It is believed the pilot's alertness averted any major accident. However, no detailed statement has yet been received from the authorities on the matter.
