International human rights organisation Amnesty International has written to the law minister flagging concerns over three laws.
The letter is dated October 26; it was published on October 29. It has been signed by Smriti Singh, the organisation's South Asia Regional Director. TBS reported this information.
The letter flags concerns over three laws — the Cyber Protection (Amendment) Act 2026, the Prevention and Remedy of Enforced Disappearance Act 2026, and the SRB Act 2026.
What Amnesty has asked for
The letter makes two specific calls to the government. First, the organisation has called for the withdrawal of the Cyber Protection (Amendment) Act 2026.
Second, it has called for amending the remaining two laws — the Prevention and Remedy of Enforced Disappearance Act 2026 and the SRB Act 2026 — to bring them in line with international human rights obligations. In other words, Amnesty has demanded amendments so that these two laws are consistent with international human rights standards.
Background
This letter comes after a high-level meeting. In September, on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly, the law minister met Amnesty International's Secretary General Agnes Callamard. The letter was sent after that meeting, according to the report.
Amnesty International works on human rights situations around the world. When it has concerns about the laws and policies of different countries, the organisation raises recommendations with the governments concerned — this letter is part of that practice.
No reaction from the government on the letter is known yet. Attention will now be on how the government responds to this call.
