Cookies this site sets
- ttbn_consent: remembers your analytics choice. Lasts one year.
- ttbn_av: a random visitor ID for unique and returning visitor counts. Set only if you accept analytics. Lasts one year.
- ttbn_sid: a random visit ID that groups page views into one visit. Set only if you accept analytics. Refreshed on each page; it lasts 30 minutes without activity.
- ttbn_vid: remembers the one reaction you gave to an article, so the reaction can be changed or removed. Set when you react. Analytics does not read it, and it works whatever you choose here.
- Session and security cookies: needed for forms and for keeping the site secure. The site cannot work without them.
What reader analytics records
When you accept: the address path of each page you open (without any query string), the time, which article it was, and random IDs stored only as keyed hashes.
Never recorded: your IP address, your browser or device details, search words, names, email addresses or the cookie values themselves.
Stored with each page view: only the address path (without any query string), the time, the article it belongs to, and two keyed hashes (of the visitor and visit IDs). The day a visitor was first seen is also stored, so that new and returning visitors can be told apart. An IP address is never stored: a keyed hash of it is kept in the server cache for one minute, only to limit how many page views one address can count.
Analytics records are kept for 12 months. The site removes older records with a nightly clean-up task; that task runs only where the server runs the site's scheduled tasks, so until it does, older records remain.
If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, no page views are counted.
Change your choice
