The Election Commission has decided to temporarily suspend the national identity card (NID) server over fears of a cyber attack. The information was reported in Desh TV's news on October 29.

According to the report, the server was temporarily shut down to avoid the risk of a possible cyber attack. However, no details are known about the nature or source of the attack, or how long the server will remain down.

What NID services are used for

The national identity card is the primary identity document for the country's citizens. The Election Commission maintains this database; NID data is used in preparing and updating the voter list.

Beyond the voter list, NID verification is required for many services. National identity card information is used in passport applications, opening bank accounts, registering mobile SIMs, and various other government and private services. Every day, many citizens apply for NID corrections, duplicate cards, or information updates. Because so many services depend on it, the server shutdown is believed to potentially cause temporary disruption to verification processes.

However, the report mentions nothing about the scale of disruption or alternative arrangements. No formal statement from the Election Commission on the matter is known yet either.

The cybersecurity context

Government databases are typically targets for cybercriminals. Such attacks may be carried out for various purposes, including data theft, service disruption, or ransom demands.

When a risk emerges, temporarily shutting down a server as a precaution can be part of protective measures. This is believed to help avoid potential damage.

It is not yet known when the NID server will be fully operational again. Those concerned are awaiting an official announcement from the Election Commission.
