In a significant development for Bangladesh's garment industry, the newly formed minimum wage board held its first meeting on 4 November 2026 at Segunbagicha, Dhaka, chaired by board chairman Syed Azad Subhani. The meeting decided that the new wage structure for readymade garment workers will be finalised and implemented in December 2026, and workers will receive the enhanced wages from January — a decision agreed to by both the owner and worker sides.

Worker-side representative Babul Akhtar, general secretary of the Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation, told reporters: "ডিসেম্বরে নতুন মজুরি বাস্তবায়ন হবে। জানুয়ারি থেকে শ্রমিকরা নতুন মজুরি হাতে পাবেন." He added that the owner-side representative also agreed to the timeline.

Owner-side representative ABM Shamsuddin, a BGMEA director, fully endorsed the plan: December implementation, with new wages paid from January. In the second meeting, both sides will submit their wage proposals separately. Workers are demanding that the minimum monthly wage be raised from the current Tk 12,500 to Tk 30,000, citing rising living costs.

The government formed the six-member wage board on 1 November, amid protests and clashes in industrial areas including Savar, Ashulia and Gazipur. Sources: The Business Standard, Textile Mirror BD, Banglar Shomoy.
