Two newly elected members of parliament will take oath today, Tuesday (November 3), at noon at the Speaker's office in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban — Mirza Faysal Amin, winner of the Thakurgaon-1 by-election, and Eliza Jaman, elected unopposed to reserved women's seat-23. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikrom will administer the oath.
Md. Rashed Mizan, assistant director of the public relations branch of the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat, confirmed the oath-taking on Monday (November 2) afternoon. Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni also confirmed the matter, according to reports.
In the Thakurgaon-1 by-election held on October 29, BNP-nominated candidate Mirza Faysal Amin won on the 'sheaf of paddy' symbol. The Election Commission published a gazette on October 31 declaring him the winner. His nearest rival, Jamaat-e-Islami's Delawar Hossain, received 96,513 votes. Faysal Amin's vote total has been reported as over 227,000 across outlets.
According to reports, the Thakurgaon-1 seat fell vacant after Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir took office as the country's 23rd president.
Meanwhile, Eliza Jaman, elected unopposed to reserved women's seat-23, was declared elected in a November 2 gazette by the Election Commission.
With the oath-taking, the two begin their formal journey in parliament. They will assume duties as members of parliament after the ceremony.
